Quick orientation

If you're in a hurry: ETIAS is a €20 online authorization, launches Q4 2026, required for visa-exempt travelers, valid up to 3 years. Doesn't replace the 90/180 stay rule, doesn't cover Ireland or the UK, doesn't apply to EU citizens.

01The basics

What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System — a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt non-EU travelers to the Schengen Area. It's comparable to the US ESTA. You apply online, pay €20, and receive an electronic link to your passport.

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. A visa is a consular document with specific legal standing; ETIAS is an electronic authorization. The difference matters for legal purposes (refusals, appeals, entry rights) even if the end result — you can board a flight — looks the same.

When does ETIAS launch?

Q4 2026 is the current expectation. The program depends on EES completing full deployment by April 10, 2026; some months of buffer are baked in. A transitional grace period is expected after launch.

How is this different from EES?

EES is the biometric entry/exit system — it records when non-EU travelers arrive and leave. It's a border-infrastructure change, not a traveler-facing application. ETIAS is the pre-authorization travelers fill out. Both go live in the same window, but they do different jobs.

02Who needs ETIAS

I'm American — do I need ETIAS?

Yes. All US passport holders entering Schengen for short stays need ETIAS from launch. See the US-specific guide.

I'm British — do I need ETIAS?

Yes. Despite EU membership being recent history, UK passport holders now count as third-country visa-exempt travelers — the same category as Americans.

I have an EU passport and a US passport. Which do I use?

The EU one. You're treated as an EU citizen; no ETIAS, no fee, no form.

I have an EU residence card. Do I need ETIAS?

No. A valid residence card or long-stay visa (type D) replaces both ETIAS and the Schengen visa.

I have a Schengen visa in my passport. Do I still need ETIAS?

No. A valid Schengen visa takes precedence. Once it expires, if you're visa-exempt, you'll need ETIAS.

Does my two-year-old need ETIAS?

Yes, but the fee is waived for anyone under 18. Parents apply on the child's behalf, using the child's passport.

03Applying

When should I apply?

At least 96 hours before your flight. Most approvals come in minutes; a small minority take longer.

Where do I apply?

Only at the official EU ETIAS portal (travel-europe.europa.eu). Third-party "ETIAS services" are legal but add markup without adding value.

How long does the application take to fill out?

Ten minutes for most people. A well-prepared traveler with passport in hand can be done in five.

What if I make a mistake?

Submitted applications can't be edited. Minor mistakes may surface at the border; significant ones require a new application and a new fee.

Can I apply on behalf of my family?

Yes. Each person needs a separate application, but one person can fill out all of them.

04Cost and payment

How much does ETIAS cost?

€20 per application. Free for under-18s, over-70s, and family members of EU citizens.

How do I pay?

Credit or debit card; Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported at the official portal. Currency is euro.

Are refunds available?

No. Even refused applications are not refunded, as is standard with travel-authorization programs.

05Validity

How long is ETIAS valid?

Up to three years, or until your passport expires — whichever is sooner.

How many times can I enter on one ETIAS?

Unlimited times, subject to the separate 90-in-180 Schengen stay limit.

I got a new passport — does my ETIAS still work?

No. Apply again; ETIAS is tied to a specific passport number.

Can ETIAS be extended?

No. When it expires, apply for a new one.

06At the border

Do I need to print my ETIAS?

No. It's electronic and linked to your passport. Airlines look it up automatically; border officers do too.

What does a border officer check?

Passport validity, ETIAS status (via lookup), your purpose of travel and onward ticket, sometimes proof of funds. Same as today, with ETIAS added.

Can I be denied entry with a valid ETIAS?

Yes. ETIAS is an authorization, not a guarantee. A border officer may still refuse entry on other grounds.

07If something goes wrong

What if my application is refused?

You receive a detailed notice with the specific reason, the responsible member state, and the appeals procedure. You may also reapply with corrected information.

What if I show up without an ETIAS?

During the transitional grace period, you may be admitted with a warning. Once enforcement is fully live, airlines will refuse to board you.

What if I overstay the 90 days?

Overstays risk fines, entry bans, and future ETIAS refusals. Use the 90/180 calculator to plan.

I received a phishing email about ETIAS. Is it real?

Very likely scam. The EU communicates via official domains (europa.eu). Never click through on an unexpected email; go to the portal directly.
